    No More Sticky Hoops

Last month posts were made under "Towels".  We got to discussing 505 adhesive spray for hoopless embroidery. Almost all my embroidery seems to be on unstabilized fabrics so I always seem to be using my handy 505 spray. I use blue painters tape to cover my hoop before spraying and have had great sucess. Designerlady (Marlene) (have to give credit, where credit is due) suggested using aluminum foil to cover the hoop, and Pat recommended those great foil wrapper sheets. Idea Well, I got  some of the foil wrapper sheets and gave it a try. I had to post how wonderful they work. After stabilizing you just cover your entire hoop and cut out around the inside area and spray and throw the sheet away. Just pennies wasted. It is little tips like these that we in the ME world enjoy. Anything to make little painstaking tasks easier.

    Thanks Marlene!!

    All very good suggestions.

Always looking for methods to recycle, every time I filled the fridge with bottled drinking water I would think - these boxes (bottoms) are too good to toss.  The make pretty good trays to hold quilt blocks as such, but here is another idea............

I use the cardboard box to set the hooped stabilizer in.  Then I set a frame made from cardboard over it and spray.  If any of the 505 should drift onto the hoop, I use DK5 to clean it up (seldom needed).

I have used this method for about two years, same box and frames.

I have also read that a large cereal box works just as well.  Cut out one side the size needed for the hoop.  I would cut for the largest and still use the frame method to make the opening smaller when needed.

No more cardboard boxes or plastic bottles to recycle - switched to PUR water filters and adult sippy cups. Wink

I do so like the ideas.  Recycling is so important to me.

I too dislike the cardboard under those bottles of water.  This is a great suggestion for the base of the spray procedure.

Any other ideas for those boxes?  They are too heavy and strong to just put in recycling.

It sure seems to me that I saw an answer to this somewhere.

There are adhesive removers on the market and ATG does have one.  It is a 3 can set at this link.  Do be careful because I have used some cleaners and ended up with damage to the surface.  Hoops are not cheap to replace.

You might also check with your dealer where you got your machine for their suggestion.

I am so sorry but for the sake of me, I just can't visulize what everyone is doing with the foil on their hoops.  Could someone post a picture so I can see it.  I don't understand why you would cover your hoop?  Do you leave the foil on when stitching?  Please explain.  Margie

Thanks for all your help.  Margie

My hoops were all messy from using spray adhesive, and after reading a tip on this site I used an enzyme type washing powder, soaked the hoops, and VOILA!   Clean hoops.  The spray gunge and residue of stabiliser just rubbed off while wet.  They look like new!  Colleen H. South Africa.Smile

    Re: No More Sticky Hoops

I always use lighter fluid to clean most adhesives off a smooth surfaqce. A Dr. showed me this when removing and old bandaid. Actually I buy a quart can of V & PM Naptha (same thing only cheaper). It won't harm the plastic in the hoops.

What is a foil wrapper sheet?

I use Goo Be Gone to clean  the adhesive.  It comes off with just a simple wipe with a paper towel and an index finger.

I too use the 505 spray, which by the way, says it isn't doesn't leave any sticky residue.  HAH.  I spray my hoops with a little bit of WD40 and scrub gently with one of the soft dish scrubs.  It removes all of the sticky residue.  Then give a quick wash with some soapy water and rinse and dry and you're set to go again.  Works great on ANY sticky stuff, not just the hoops.  Use it ro remove the residue left from stickers.

I think I did hear that WD40 is a good cleaner.  And, it is important that the hoop be carefully cleaned.  As I recall, I take better care of my hoop than my first born!!  LOL!

And, that first born did love stickers on EVERYTHING.....doors, walls, the dog...

    Re: No More Sticky Hoops

I use X-IT-Out Vandel Mark Remover. My dealer sells it and said some sprays will damage the hoops. The only problem is the fumes, best to use it outside. What are foil wrapper sheets? I'm going to try the cardboard suggestion. I'd love to not have to clean my hoops any moreand this seems to be the cheapest method.

    Re: No More Sticky Hoops

Thanks for reminding us that hoops are easily damaged.  I can think of several times when I used a cleaner on plastic of different types and found that I ended up with a ruined surface.

The foil sheets are "Reynolds Wrappers" which is a box of 25 speets, precut in 10 x 14 inches and I get them for .99 cents.  That 4 cents worth of foil saves me time and effort and I toss them after use.  I would have a problem with storing them because after spraying with adhesive, then they are sticky...

You may not find this works for you, but I have learned over the years (lots of them) that my time is precious and I balance the convenience against the costs.

    Re: No More Sticky Hoops

I think when the 505 spray advertises no residue they mean on the needle. We want the sticky on the stabilizer, but you can't just spray without protecting your hoop. I always protect my hoop. I always take that extra step to avoid the mess. If I do get any sticky on my hoop I just spray on DK5. It is a pump sprayer which I like and it removes adhesive from the use of 202, 404 and 505 sprays. It works very well.

Here are some photos of how I cover my hoop with painters tape and also the foil wrappers. I always used the painters tape before I got the hot tip on the foil. In the pictures I do not have the stabilizer hooped, I just used it for the picture. You hoop your stabilizer cover with the foil or tape. When using the foil, just take an old pair of sissors and cut the opening, then spray. Discard the tape or foil and you are ready.

Margie, I hope the pictures give you the idea.

I am surely missing something here.  Why is everyone spraying their hoops?  I use 505 to attach stabilizer to my fabric prior to hooping and I also use it to spray fabric pieces for applique.  The spray never comes into contact with the hoop.  Is there a technique of which I am unaware?  Thanks in advance for *enlightening me.  (*I can use all I can getConfusedConfused

Grammy-Your demonstration is excellent.  I know that I see a tip that I really think is great, then when I need it, I forget where I saw it and the details.

These pictures give me a perfect tip, I won't forget the pictures and that makes this tip a StarStarStarStarStar a real 5 star!!

Josksgran-Well, I cannot think of any reason not to prespray and adhere fabric.  That is so simple.

But, there are unhoopable fabrics/projects that still have a defined area of adhesive.

    Think ahead!

Hi Nancy, Thank you for the kind words. I am very happy that you are pleased with the foil. I have been doing this for many years. It is bad enough getting fumes from the 505(which by the way, I do outside when the weather permits.) that I didn't want to use any more chemicals to then clean the hoops. I did try using cardboard first, but found that some of the spray could still get on the hoops. Not a lot, but enough for me to try the foil. It is so cheap in the $ stores and no harmful fumes.

Thank you for posting the pictures. I am sure after our friends here see that, they too will try the foil

Have a great day everyone  and Happy Embroidering.

    Ladies,

I haven't posted to this forum before, however; I am going to jump in here and put in my two cents. If your hoops are all "gooped" up, please just give them a little spritz of WD 40 and they clean up wonderfully!!! I just put down' my old towel and spritz...let it set for a short time and wipe away. No goopy stuff left at all...plus any residue can be wiped away w/ a papertowel as you would NOT want to get any onto your fabric project.  I am certain there are numerous different ways to clean up a hoop...but WD 40 is very inexpensive (found at the Dollar Tree..$1) and has variable uses!!
